District Attorney Clint Wellborn grew up on a ranch in Catron County in the small town of Quemado. His dad worked for the New Mexico State Police in addition to ranching and his mom was the local postmaster. His dad was elected Sheriff of Catron County for 2 terms after retiring from the State Police before retiring full time to ranching. After Clint graduated from Quemado High School he attended college at Western New Mexico University in Silver City for one year before transferring to Eastern New Mexico University in Portales where he was a member of the college rodeo team. This is where he met his future wife, Jan. Clint and Jan will have been married twenty-seven years this summer and they have two children, Cathryn, who is 16 and Clinton, who is 13.
After obtaining his degree in history at Eastern he attended law school at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He obtained his law degree in 1989 and was admitted to the New Mexico Bar the same year. He and his wife lived in Las Cruces for a short time before moving to Socorro in 1990 .
Clint was in private practice in Socorro for 10 years as the contract public defender before taking office as District Attorney for the Seventh Judicial District in January, 2001. Clint served as Vice President of the New Mexico District Attorney’s Association for 2 years from 2005 to 2007 and served as President from 2007 to 2009. He currently still serves on several statewide committees representing his fellow District Attorneys.
